Overview
In this project, we have utilized the metaphor of a "washing machine" to symbolize the detrimental effects of excessive competition within a specific field. The intense competition has created an environment of overwhelming pressure and internal friction, where individuals find themselves unable to progress towards their true potential and goals. Our interactive installation features a washing machine as a central device, prompting the audience to question the draining anxiety that arises from constantly comparing oneself to others and striving to keep up with their achievements, ultimately losing sight of one's own path in an endless "loop".
The installation includes a control panel consisting of a pump head, a rotary knob, and a pair of plugs and outlets. These elements represent the various aspects of pressure, the machine's spinning speed, and the on/off switch. Users themselves become part of the interactive experience, embodying the pressures they face. As users approach the washing machine, an animated figure representing them jumps into the spinning washing machine, symbolically engaging in the process of involution. Their actions within the installation mirror the concept of involution, as they pursue goals without a clear understanding of what they are truly chasing.
Ultimately, when users unplug the machine and the cycle comes to a stop, they realize that they have been endlessly pursuing a single sock. This lost sock can serve as a representation of the meaningless goals people numbly pursue or the self caught in a purposeless loop, depending on the viewer's interpretation. Through this project, we aim to draw attention to the constant quest for "better" that we find ourselves in, prompting a reevaluation of our true goals and priorities.
